To meet the ever-increasing demand for competent technocrats by the industrial sector at the global level, the Govt. Polytechnic College for Girls, Ropar was established by the Punjab Government in the year 1995. The college, with its campus spread over an area of 22 acres approximately, is located on the Nangal Road.
IIT Ropar was setup in Government Polytechnic College for Girls, Ropar in 2009. In the Year 2022, Government Polytechnic College for Girls, Ropar reopened after 14 years and two diploma courses of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computer Science Engineering with 30 seats intake in each course started after the approval by All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi. This Institute is affiliated to the Punjab State Board of Technical Education & Industrial Training (PSBTE & IT), Chandigarh. With the approval of Punjab Government, this Institute was converted into a Co-educational one in 2023 and now provides the opportunity to the boys, as they would be able to take the admission in the Institute for various diploma courses.

International Women's Day was celebrated at IIT Ropar. Muskan and Neelam of 2nd Semester students got 2nd prize in Rangoli.
